a little history

RUTABEGORZ FULLERTON, It's 1971 and this Fullerton address, 211 N. Pomona Ave, was set for demolition.  Four long-haired kids, who owned the newly-opened Rutabegorz Restaurant, had a better idea for the sight - keep their coffee shop brewing!

The legacy of Rutabegorz began nearly 40 years ago in the former home and office of physician Dr. G. Wendell Olsen.  The original owners of Ruta's, often referred to as hippies, saw real potential in this charming building.  Located a little off the beaten path, they were going to make it an important part of "downtown".  Their idea to have a place to meet and enjoy a cup of coffee would fit in just right at this location.  They acquired the space, and should we say...the rest is history!

Unfortunately, trouble was on the horizon and "Big Brother" (Pacific Telephone Company) wanted their spot.  The corporation threatened, with the blade of a bulldozer, to turn Ruta's dreams into a parking lot.  With the help of a supportive community and their local clientele, Ruta's stopped their big building neighbor and won!  Their little java stop did not become a paved paradise, instead remained a funky little coffee house - now a favorite in the heart of historic downtown Fullerton.

Over the years the restaurant has grown.  By connecting with the building next door, Ruta's has the ability to serve larger groups and serve more patrons.  Paul Berkman became the sole proprietor of Ruta's and the menu naturally expanded.  The early days offered our patrons such delights as coffee specials, bagel creations and desserts consisting of ice cream, carrot cake and our ever-famous cheesecake.  Today, we still have the original cheesecake, but also offer a full lunch and dinner menu - over 21 pages long!  We use only the freshest vegetables, staff a full time baker and make everything in-house.  Inside Ruta's we highlight unique artwork, all originals from local artists, past customers and employees!

Through the years Ruta's has never lost touch with it's roots - a little blast to the past in today's tech savvy world.  We will be forever a little funky and still be your place to enjoy a cup of java and chew over current events.  Ruta's is your place to enjoy a fresh and healthy meal, your place to call "home away from home".
